The History of Karenge

Water being treated at Karenge dates to the original plant built in 1978. The Karenge site is in the eastern province of Rwamagana.

The site was selected to build on the shores of Lake Mugesera, and is set to triple capacity from 15,000m3 to 45,000m3 per day when the new WTP is completed in 2027.

Building a safer tomorrow

Remote is working on the early works of construction, the civil works of the Karenge Water Treatment Plant and new Intake, from 2025. The watertight structures are currently undergoing multiple readiness testing.

In May 2026, our team transitioned to offshore mechanical works and welding the DN800 stainless steel pipeline from the pumping station and floating it into the lake.
